Could a Learning Disability Be Part of the Picture?

Common Signs You May
Be Seeing

Learning challenges can look different for everyone. You may notice:

  • Reading, writing, or math is consistently difficult.

  • Schoolwork takes much longer than expected.

  • Your child has trouble remembering or following multi-step directions.

  • Attention, organization, or completing assignments is a challenge.

  • Writing ideas down is much harder than explaining them verbally.

  • Strong effort is not leading to the progress you would expect.

What Testing Can
Help Clarify

A comprehensive evaluation may help provide a clearer understanding of:

  • Academic strengths and areas of difficulty

  • Reading, writing, and math skills

  • Patterns that may be interfering with learning

  • Whether attention or other concerns may also be contributing

  • Areas where additional support may be helpful

  • Information that may guide school planning and next steps

Learning disability testing looks at more than grades alone. The goal is to understand how academic skills are developing, where difficulties may be occurring, and what information may help guide support at school, at home, or in future planning.

A CLEAR LEARNING DISABILITY EVALUATION PROCESS

“Clear answers can help guide better support.“

Step 1: Intake Appointment

We begin by talking through the academic concerns that led you to seek testing.

We may review school history, previous evaluations, classroom performance, interventions that have already been tried, and other information that can help us understand the learning difficulties being experienced.

Step 2: Schedule Testing

If an evaluation is appropriate, testing will be scheduled at our Lynchburg office.

The assessment may look at reading, writing, math, academic achievement, memory, attention, and other areas that can influence how someone learns and performs academically.

Step 3: Testing & Report Preparation

After testing, the clinician brings together the assessment results with school records, background information, questionnaires, and other relevant materials.

This helps identify patterns of academic strengths and weaknesses and provides a clearer picture of where learning may be breaking down.

Reports are completed within 30 days after testing is completed.

Step 4: Feedback Session

When the report is finished, we will meet with you to explain what the testing showed and answer your questions.

Recommendations may include strategies, educational supports, accommodations, or other next steps based on the findings.

Want More Detail About Learning Disability Testing?

First, we talk together about the academic concerns that brought you here for testing.

We might look at your school history, grades, past evaluations, classroom performance, and any steps already taken to help. We also pay attention to patterns you or teachers have noticed over time.

This process helps us see where learning has been challenging and what questions the evaluation should help answer.

If we recommend testing, you will complete the evaluation in person at our Lynchburg office.

Testing can cover areas like reading, writing, math, academic achievement, memory, attention, and other skills that may affect learning.

The tests we use will depend on your age, background, and the concerns we are looking into.

Once testing is complete, the clinician looks over the assessment results along with school records, questionnaires, background details, and other important information.

The goal is to find patterns in academic strengths and weaknesses and to better understand what might be making learning more difficult.

The written report will summarize the findings and provide recommendations based on the results.

Reports are completed within 30 days after testing is completed.

Once the report is finished, we will meet with you to go over the results and answer any questions you have.

We will also talk about recommendations, which might include strategies, school supports, accommodations, interventions, or other next steps that fit the individual’s needs.

Is There a Pre-Evaluation?

Yes. We start with an intake appointment before moving on to the full learning disability evaluation.

During this appointment, we will discuss the academic concerns that brought you in for testing. We will also look at school history, classroom performance, past evaluations, interventions, and other important background details.

Depending on age and situation, we might also ask for school records, IEPs or 504 Plans, teacher feedback, questionnaires, or other documents that help us understand the learning concerns.

Collecting this information ahead of time helps the clinician focus the evaluation on your specific questions and needs.

What Happens During Testing?

Testing may take several hours.

We will pace the evaluation appropriately and allow breaks when needed.

You will know what to expect.

Activities may look at reading, writing, math, memory, attention, or other skills related to learning.

Breaks are encouraged.

Pauses can be taken if the session becomes tiring or overwhelming.

There are no perfect answers.

The goal is to understand patterns of strengths and difficulty, not to “pass” or “fail” the evaluation.

We look at the whole learning picture.

Your clinician will consider test results together with academic history and other relevant information.
