Could Autism Be Part of the Picture?

Autism Testing for Children & Adolescents

Autism testing may be helpful if:

  • Your child has ongoing differences in social interaction or communication.

  • Changes in routine are especially difficult.

  • Sensory sensitivities affect daily life.

  • Your child has strong or highly focused interests.

  • School or peer relationships have raised questions about development or social functioning.

  • You’re wondering whether ADHD, anxiety, learning concerns, or autism may be contributing to what you’re seeing.

Autism Testing for
Adults

Autism testing may be helpful if:

  • You’ve experienced lifelong differences in social communication or relationships.

  • Social situations often feel effortful or draining.

  • You rely heavily on routines or predictability.

  • Sensory sensitivities have affected work, relationships, or daily life.

  • You’ve learned to mask or compensate for difficulties over time.

  • You’ve wondered whether autism, ADHD, anxiety, or another factor may help explain long-standing patterns.

An autism evaluation is designed to look at patterns across development, communication, sensory experiences, relationships, behavior, and daily life. The goal is not simply to identify a diagnosis, but to provide a clearer understanding of how these patterns fit together and what that may mean for support, planning, and next steps.

Autism shows up differently for everyone. Some people notice signs early in childhood, while others may not have questions until their teen years or adulthood. This often happens as social situations, school, work, or relationships become more complicated.

At Wyndhurst Counseling & Wellness, our autism evaluations look closely at your developmental history, how you communicate, your social experiences, sensory sensitivities, routines, interests, and daily life.

We bring all of this information together to help you see if autism might explain certain patterns in your life and to find out what support or next steps could help.

Autism Testing May Explore:

  • Social communication and interaction
  • Developmental history
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Repetitive behaviors or routines
  • Focused or highly specific interests
  • Flexibility with change
  • Emotional and behavioral patterns
  • School, work, or relationship functioning
  • Masking or compensating strategies
  • Other concerns that may overlap with autism

A Clear Autism Evaluation Process

“No guesswork. No confusion. Just a clear path forward.”

Step 1: Intake Appointment

We begin with an intake appointment to understand the concerns that brought you to testing.

We may review developmental history, school or work experiences, relationships, sensory needs, routines, and other relevant background.

Step 2: Schedule Testing

If testing is recommended, the evaluation is completed in person at our Lynchburg office.

Assessment may include interviews, questionnaires, observation, structured activities, and standardized measures selected for the individual.

Step 3: Testing & Report Preparation

Your clinician reviews the testing results along with information gathered from interviews, questionnaires, records, and developmental history.

The goal is to understand how the different pieces fit together.

Reports are completed within 30 days after testing is completed.

Step 4: Feedback Session

Once the report is ready, we will schedule a feedback appointment to review the findings and answer your questions.

You will receive recommendations and practical next steps based on the individual’s needs.

Want More Detail About the Autism Testing Process?

The evaluation starts with an intake appointment so we can learn more about what brought you in for testing.

We might talk about things like your developmental history, how you communicate, your social experiences, any sensory sensitivities, daily routines, school or work background, and other important details.

If the evaluation is for a child or teen, input from parents and information from school can be helpful. For adults, we may also talk about childhood experiences and patterns that have been present for a long time, if that information is available.

Once the intake appointment is complete, we will set up the in-person evaluation at our Lynchburg office.

The assessment may include interviews, questionnaires, structured activities, observation, and standardized testing, depending on the person’s age and needs.

Testing can take several hours or may be split into more than one session. We encourage breaks whenever needed to help the person being evaluated stay comfortable and focused.

After the evaluation, your clinician will look at the test results together with information from interviews, questionnaires, observations, records, and your developmental history.

The goal is to see how all the information connects, instead of focusing on just one score or result.

The written report will consider all of the findings and offer recommendations that match the person’s strengths and needs.

Reports are completed within 30 days after testing is completed.

When the report is ready, we will schedule a feedback session to review the results.

Your clinician will explain the findings, answer questions, and discuss what the evaluation may mean for daily life, relationships, school, work, or support needs.

You’ll also review recommendations and practical next steps based on the individual’s strengths and needs.

Is There a Pre-Evaluation?

Yes. The process begins with an intake appointment before the full autism evaluation.

During this appointment, we’ll talk about the questions that brought you to testing and review relevant developmental history, communication patterns, social experiences, sensory sensitivities, routines, school or work history, and other background information.

Depending on the individual’s age and circumstances, we may also request questionnaires, school records, previous evaluations, or input from someone who knows the person well.

Gathering this information before testing helps the clinician understand the broader context and plan the evaluation appropriately.
