What is DBT?

The word “dialectic” in dialectical behavior therapy is to remind us that real life issues are complex, and that life has ups and downs that are dealt with by talking things out by “self-talk” and through “talking it through” with others. The group process is very invested in really looking for “what is true” which helps to balance out the negative emotions.

Harnessing the Power of DBT

DBT uses many of the techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy (DBT). It helps group members recognize and challenge the different types of distorted thinking that are beneath negative feelings that instigate unwanted behavior. Example: Group members learn to identify when they are catastrophizing…thinking that the sky is falling or that the worst thing imaginable will happen. When these types of thoughts come, instead of acting upon them, the DBT group will help group members to challenge these negative thoughts by techniques learned in the group.

Exploring the Benefits of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a structured program with a very strong educational component. DBT is designed to provide a skill set for managing intense emotions and navigating social relationships, including family, friends, and coworkers. Originally, DBT was developed to curb the self-destructive impulses of self-harm and suicide. However, due to how effective DBT came to be, it was also found to be effective for many other issues. It is, without question, the treatment of choice for folks who have characteristics of borderline personality disorder and for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation. No wonder it quickly became a treatment that was sought after in helping hurting individuals and families just looking for peace.

Empowering Change through DBT’s Transformative Approach

Most of us are really interested in change. And DBT is very interested in helping you to bring about the changes that you desire. Sometimes, the change that we desire does not appear to be likely. Thus so, DBT encourages us to engage in radical acceptance of certain situations without the negative self-talk about why our reality is unacceptable or bad. This process can often be messy, but we find that it is worth the effort.
