Want more detail on our Psychological Testing Process?

Your first step begins with an intake session. During this appointment, we take time to understand your needs, concerns, and goals for testing.

This helps us build a complete picture. We’ll also review your insurance details to confirm any pre-authorizations or referrals needed for coverage.

It’s helpful to bring any relevant educational plans or notes from teachers for school-related assessments. And if you’re traveling from out of town, we can handle necessary forms like ROIs (release of information) during your appointment.

After your intake, we’ll move on to scheduling your testing sessions. Testing may occur over one day or be split into two-day sessions, depending on your needs.

Most sessions last around four (4) hours, so we recommend bringing a snack and drink to stay comfortable. If you’re a parent, we ask that you remain on-site during your child’s testing. This way, we can adjust if a child needs a break or needs to pause and reschedule.

It’s also important that you continue your regular medications as prescribed. Testing while off your usual medication can affect the accuracy of the results, especially for ADHD evaluations. If you’re feeling unwell on the day of your appointment, it’s always better to reschedule so we can ensure the most accurate testing outcome.

Once your testing is complete, we work on scoring and interpreting your results. We use highly regarded, evidence-based testing instruments to ensure accuracy and depth.

Typically, it takes around two weeks to finalize your report, but it can take up to 30 days. Please remember that if part of your evaluation includes forms or self-assessments from you or your child’s school, completing those promptly helps us stay on schedule.

We block out dedicated time in our calendar to focus solely on reviewing and preparing your report. Our goal is to provide thoughtful, thorough feedback that’s easy to understand and genuinely helpful.

When your report is ready, we will schedule a time to meet for feedback session. During the feedback session we thoroughly review your results, answer any questions, and explain our recommendations.

We want you to leave this conversation feeling informed, supported, and equipped with next steps. Whether the results guide treatment and educational planning or provide clarity and peace of mind, we’ll ensure you fully understand what the testing has revealed.

Is There a Pre-Evaluation?

Before your full assessment, we start with an intake appointment. During this session, we’ll review your history, concerns, and goals for testing. If we determine that any pre-assessment materials are helpful, we’ll provide self-report forms for you to complete either at home or here in our office.

These forms give us a more precise picture of your experiences and help us decide whether additional testing is recommended. Our goal is to make the process simple and focused, so you know what to expect from the beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions about Psychological Testing

Psychological testing at Wyndhurst Counseling is a self-pay service and is not billable through insurance.

We know this can be frustrating, and we share your frustration. We have provided insurance-based therapy for over 20 years and would love to offer testing through insurance too. Unfortunately, the reality is different for psychological testing.

Why We Have Chosen a Self-Pay Model

Managed care often limits or denies coverage for psychological testing, even when it’s needed. Here are just a few of the challenges we’ve encountered:

  • Insurance companies cap testing hours or restrict the types of assessments we can provide.
  • Many plans deny coverage for ADHD and Autism testing, especially for adults.
  • Some deny testing altogether, claiming it’s “educational” rather than “medical.”
  • Pre-authorizations can take weeks, only to be denied by someone who’s never met you.
  • Even after approval, insurance may later refuse to pay or demand the money back (“clawback”).

All of this creates delays, confusion, and surprise bills for clients—and pulls our clinicians away from what matters most: helping you.

Benefits of Self-Pay for Psychological Testing

  • Transparent pricing – no surprises or insurance runaround
  • Tailored care – we recommend what you need, not what insurance limits
  • Faster scheduling – no waiting on pre-approvals
  • You stay in control – if more testing is recommended after your intake, it’s your choice
  • It is likely that your testing could be paid thru you HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account)
